Miu , a newbie to the music scene signed with Linfair Records has recently released her debut album <存在的力量>(The present strength) and has released a whopping total of 6 (?, I think) singles for this album. One of the standouts of this album is the title track of the same name , which was actually written and produced by miu herself. She has already established quite a big fanbase for herself with her interesting image, and I hope to see more of her soon!
We have lots of new singers who are debuting this year ; here are some of their singles to give you a little taste of their styles and inspirations.
First up , Miu (zhu li jing) whose first single Cun Zai De Li Liang (the strength that is present) touched me deeply and I felt a sense of deja vu when listening to it. So comforting , and a definite recommendation from me.
Second is 葉穎 , who has released her new debut album chu fa (starting out) on the 3rd of April. Her smooth and simple but pure voice was what really got to me.
There have been a few new movies on the taiwanese scene lately , and following it are some of the theme songs which feature some of my favourite singers , such as A-FU and Anthony Neely!
For those of you who are like me and are missing relative newbie A-Fu (she hasn't made an appearance since mid last year where she released her EP <All happy>) she has released a new single that is the theme song for the movie (determination) starring Yao Yao. the song's name is 让我爱上你(let me fall in love with you) and totally fits the theme of the movie.
Anthony Neely worked with Skot Suyama on this song for his new movie <faithball> which is about an underdog baseball team , in which Anthony plays the coach. Sounds promising！ The song is already making it pretty big on the charts , especially in singapore where on the 9.33 YES FM charts it has made it into the top 10. A song with a really funky , grounding beat which really gets you going and really sets the theme for the movie. I want to watch it already!
*to make things clear , I don't really hate jay chous music as you will see as you continue reading , it's just at times I do have a strong sense of dislike for his choices within the music industry .
I've never been the biggest jay Chou fan. After I graduated from the initial stages of learning about c-pop and began to widen my horizons what he stood for and his music became something that I saw to be without musical integrity and often having themes that I disagree with , such as promoting of sexuality and promiscuity in females , especially in his music videos. His 2009 and 2010 albums to me were kind of duds which almost totally evaporated any respect that I had for him , with songs such as 跑车女神(sportscar goddess) and also having first singles that sounded almost identical. He is also known to contradict himself , having once said in an interview that he will stick to his Chinese roots and refuses to learn English but yet is one of the first Chinese pop stars to star prominently in a Hollywood flick (the green hornet). He's famous for his penchant for fast cars , gambling (he once spent over a million at a casino in LA) and supposedly young women (he's rumored to be dating an 18 year old model/host). I hadn't given him much thought until he released his latest album <opus 12> at the end of last year , and even then my response was pretty much "ugh blonde hair and abs." . The title of the album didn't even make any sense to me and the concept was too open to be complex in any way.
However , I still cherish his old songs , especially those from his 2008 Capricorn album and favourites such as (simple love) and (rainbow). It has always been a mystery to me but it is songs such as these that are extremely comforting to me . After listening to a few of his songs on YouTube from his latest album , I decided to get it and resolved to just listen to it with no strings attached ; no commitment to writing a review on it , not needing to think about the concept , the lyrics , who produced it , who arranged it or get into all the details. Instead , I just listened . I really listened and I actually really liked it because I could feel that sense of comfort coming back to me , especially in <big Ben> , <ukelele> and a few other songs from this album.
Then one day , while I was humming <big Ben> in my head , the lyrics popped up : "耍什么嘴硬，耍耍什么嘴硬 有什么毛病 又又有什么毛病 我很大起我没你消气我会原谅你们你仔细听＂. They were so simple , but yet had the ability to make me feel so warm and cuddly instead and at that moment I knew why. Jay Chou isn't trying to change the world. He isn't Michael Jackson , he isn't Wang leehom. He , on the inside is essentially an average human being , with similar emotions that relate to each and every one of us in our every day lives. His lyrics and his songs are easy to relate with us on an everyday level , maybe just to keep us going in work or at school , or to give simple and sweet romantic advice. If you look deep deep down behind the snapbacks ,the blonde hair and the abs , there is just this guy who makes music purely to make people happy ; to make himself happy and to make others happy. And that happiness , and the way that he sees his music and makes his music is at the core of many of his songs.
If there was to be one Chinese artist that everyone liked , in my personal experience it would be jay Chou. Before this , I always thought , couldn't there be someone more worthy of respect and adoration than jay Chou , the man who really has no aim in life? Wang leehom , Khalil fong or yoga Lin perhaps. All of these critically acclaimed geniuses with a worthy aim in the music industry. But now I finally understand what Chous aim is - to be happy and although we don't always see eye to eye on (more than several occasions) , it's okay now to just see his name popping up as the only Chinese artist on other peoples Facebook likes or people telling me "I only know who jay Chou is". Because his simple messages and masterpieces , though a select few ,will always give me comfort and that pure feeling of happiness at its core in every note and every listen.
