Zooey Wonder amongst SXSW performers to have Visa cancelled at the last minute; removed from 2017 Taiwan Beats Lineup [Opinion]
2017's SXSW Festival an annual Tech, Music and Film festival held in Austin, Texas seems to have become just the perfect situation for Trump's executive travel ban order to play out in disastrous form on the world stage.
Seen to be the largest international festival of its kind, each year artists and creative types flock to the event for an opportunity to showcase their works. However, this year Trump's travel ban, nicknamed 'the muslim ban' for its effect on those with nationality or dual nationality of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen has caused quite a stir, first with punk band Told Slant dropping out of the festival due to a clause in the performers' contract which threatened deportation of artists. Last week, Italian band Soviet Soviet was also denied entry and was unable to participate in the festivities.
Yesterday (13th March), three other bands announced that they would not be attending SXSW due to members having Visa issues; namely Yussef Kamal, United Vibrations and post hardcore band Massive scar Era.
In an unprecedented move, on the 11th of March Taiwanese indie singer-songwriter Zooey Wonder joined the ranks of SXSW artists who had been denied entry into the U.S. when her ESTA was revoked at the last minute upon arrival at the airport.
Slated to perform at the Taiwan Beats showcase which has been held at SXSW for the past two years, Wonder was meant to perform alongside new and promising artists such as Hello Nico, Matzka, DJ Question Mark and Jade Eyes.
Due to the AIT (American Institute in Taiwan) being closed on the weekends, Wonder has of yet not received an explanation for why her visa was revoked.
Although Taiwan is not on the list of countries who are affected by this travel ban, the quick succession of visa revokes, some of which directly associated to Trump's stringent policies hint at the same being the case for Wonder.
Of the dramatic turn of events, Wonder took to her Facebook page. In one part, she expresses her feelings at the visa revoke, saying:
"Although at the time I was really disappointed, but after returning from the airport and resting for a day, I've got my focus back and am preparing now for the next two concert tours. Thank you everyone for your care, this album and concert will be great on your ears and eyes. Other than there being many surprising special guests, you can also expect many different performance formats, hope everyone can see my perseverance and growth in the last few years".
Being denied upon her first trip to America, this must have been a blow for Zooey. However, I believe with her prowess and unique musical style, her voice is resilient in the winds of change and will make its way around the world no matter how or when.

Zooey Wonder’s ‘Wonderland’ album will be released in March 2017. She will be playing to crowds at Taichung Legacy on the 10th of March, 18th of March at Kaohsiung’s Warehouse, and on the 22nd of March at Taipei Legacy.
After a four-year wait, Nick Chou is finally back in the saddle releasing his own album "REAL", featuring a number of sick collaborations with Western DJs such as Nicky Romero, Bassjackers, Borgore, Kronic and Ricky Remedy.
The presence of these experienced DJs lends Nick's album a more slick feel, but it is clear from his self-composed melodies and lyrics that this is more in the vein of his true style, hence the album title "Real".
Incorporating a mix of EDM, Trap, pop, rock, hip hop, ballads and R&B into his 13-song double album, Nick is ready to show the world his real self, not as that packaged idol he was once seen as, but as a true man of music.
While the first half of the album is more sentimental and balladic, the second half is more EDM-focused, and features collaborations with some of the Western music market's biggest DJs.
According to Nick, this is the statement he released regarding his absence from the music scene in past years:
"In these last few years I have never stopped building up my musical career. Been working hard at writing new songs, using musical online platforms, getting to know other DJs and asynchronously writing with them....that allowed this work to slowly have an overall shape. After that, I took my works to look for people who would understand it, in doing so there were many bouts of bitterness and hardship that others didn't know about. Composing is a lonely road, but luckily I can use my Facebook and Instagram to interact with fans, and got a lot of support and confidence from there. Of course, I also received a lot of comments about my position and appearance, but not only did these comments not bring me down, but they instead gave me even more to think about, and made concrete my standards for my music, its variety and attitude. Now I know, this is the road I want to walk!"
Despite all the idol dramas and commercial activities, Nick is now trying and successfully reinventing himself as a singer-songwriter with a sufficient amount of clout. Gaining credibility by writing the theme song "Ga Tao" for the movie of the same name and participating in the behind-the-scenes creative process of rapper Miss Ko's album, this guy is one up-and-comer to watch out for.

Liked our Sunshine Collection series and missed out on our Facebook Post series? Now introducing our next themed series, the #PioneerSelection! This time around, we'll be entertaining you with four songs by four different artists; all of whom have made a major contribution to the Chinese music industry in one way or another. Let's take a look, shall we?
First up, we have my one and only Leehom Wang (I know he's married, but a girl can only dream..), and his song <龙的传人>(Descendants of the Dragon), which was a complete game-changer for the music scene in Taiwan. Not only did it turn many heads with its out-there sound, it created new and innovative possibilities for the industry, with Leehom proposing his own brand of 'chinked-out' music, encouraging asians everywhere to be proud of their heritage, and their identity. Leehom is definitely one of the reasons I began to think more deeply about my identity as an asian, and also one of the people who inspired my passion for Chinese music! So he is definitely number one on my list! Got any recommendations of your own? Let us know in the comments below, and don't forget to support us by liking our Facebook page!
As for the second part of Asian Pop Weekly's#PioneerSelection, where we introduce to you a collection of songs by some of the pioneers of the Taiwanese music industry! Today's pioneer is the legendary Jay Chou! Before his arrival on the music scene, there was no one like him, and more than a decade on, there is still no one who has reinvented chinese music the way he has. His unique fusion of chinese traditional music, classical music, hip hop and his fast-talking vocal style creates an atmosphere like no other; in his song <简单爱>, it's simplicity reflects the epitome of simple love in a way that has yet to be challenged by any song since then.
Now that we've introduced the two greats of the late 90s (Leehom and Jay Chou), it's time to move forward a few years. Flash forward to 2006, and the emergence of 16-year old Khalil Fong, a kid from Hong Kong with big dreams, and a real talent for music. His music, influenced by the likes of R n B and Soul artists such as Babyface and Michael Jackson introduced a fusion that was never before seen in the taiwanese music industry. Dubbed 'Soulboy', throughout the years Khalil has experimented with a large number of genres, including Soul, R n B, hip hop, Blues and Funk and has emerged with a truly unique and recognisable style that can be heard from a mile away. Today, we're introducing a throwback to his first hit, <爱爱爱>, the song which threw the entire music industry into a tizzy with its' funky tunes and soul-infused arrangements. Feeling inspired yet? I sure am.
This time, we're shaking things up a little with an artist who has recently rocked the music scene with her unique and innovative rapping style. That's right, we're talking about last year's Golden Melody Award Winner for Best Newcomer Miss Ko! In recent years, she's been putting out her own unique rap style and collaborating with the likes of Amber An, Khalil Fong, and Shi Shi. She's the newest in-rapper Fo Shizzle! Okay, sorry for the bad trash talk, but she's seriously awesome. Take a listen to her single <Hey DJ> which will get you grooving like there's no tomorrow!
Thanks for reading the last part in our #PIoneerSeries! Do you have any Pioneers to share with us? There are so many more that I could think of who should be shared, including the likes of David Tao, Tanya Chua, Stefanie Sun and Joanna Wang. Who would you like to be featured? Tell us in the comments below!
A place where you can get quick updates on your favourite Asian Artists! If you have any updates as well feel free to share them with me!
