A little late, but better late than never, right? First of all, I’d like to wish all Asian Pop Weekly readers a very happy new year (Chinese New Year was just over so I consider myself only slightly late with this greeting)! As things have been hectic over the last couple of years, loyal readers may notice that the Asian Pop Weekly website has settled into a stable rhythm of posts such as news articles, lyric translations, interviews and album reviews, but I feel like it’s time to step things up a notch in terms of the amount of feature articles available on this site. So my resolution this year is to keep APW going strong, and to add a little pizzazz to our content just to spice things up.
In lieu of such a statement, I figured that I might as well start off with one of those ‘listicles’ which are so popular at the moment, a listicle of my top 10 C-pop songs of 2016 recommended especially for ABCs (individuals of Asian heritage living in Western regions), or basically for any English speakers who are interested in learning more about Chinese music. While some of these songs may not be the biggest C-pop hits of 2016, they’re nevertheless a great selection of tunes, mostly by artists with offerings friendly to the international market which will certainly be a pleasure for your ears. So without further adieu, let’s get into it!
For fans of Mandopop Queen A-Mei, her rearrangement of her 1996 hit ‘Sisters’ was released this year, and acts both as a hit of nostalgia for those of us who lived through the C-pop Golden era of the 1990s-early 2000s, but that’s not all the song’s about. A-Mei expressed that she mulled over the idea of revamping the song for years before she decided to take the plunge, and given her reputation as an avant-garde, rule-breaking artist, this song was more than just a commercial money-grabbing scheme. Opting this time to go with a simple acoustic guitar arrangement, A-Mei’s effortlessly clear and sweet voice envelops ones’ earbuds as she delivers a message for society, one of hope, love and solidarity. Listen out for her beautiful spoken message near the end of the song. Nostalgia and a real heart-warming message that would not be lost on listeners given how 2016 turned out.
Taiwan's pride and joy, superband Mayday are back and ready to release their latest album <Her Story> on the 26th of June. But wait...What's so different about this album? The fact is that NONE of the actual band members will be performing in the album at all! Instead, they will be represented by a slurry of female artists who will weave their stories through Mayday's most classic hits, creating their own renditions of Mayday's songs.
Here's what their little blurb for the album says:
她的故事，我的五月天 Her stories, Our Mayday
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
Yesterday, Today, Mayday...
10個女生10首女聲 10 Girls 10 women's voices
Day by Day, coming soon...
From what I can hear, I know that Lala Hsu, Fish Leong, Jia Jia, Waa Wei and Karen Mok are among those who are involved in this project, but apparently out of everyone who has listened to the audio trailer, no one has been able to correctly identify every single female voice within the album.
Track Listings for the album have already been released:
0:00 生命有一種絕對 Life has a kind of definite
0:14 盛夏光年 Eternal Summer
0:32 離開地球表面 Leaving the edge of the earth
0:46 溫柔 Gentleness
1:09 你不是真正的快樂 You are not really happy
1:26 我不願讓你一個人 I can't bear to leave you by yourself
1:41 如煙 Smoke
1:52 愛情萬歲 Long live Love
2:12 我心中尚未崩壞的地方 A place in my heart that hasn't collapsed
2:32 突然好想你 Suddenly thinking of you
Well, I'm going to take on that challenge and have another crack at it! What are some of your thoughts on the singers of the ten songs? Let us know in the comments below!
Singer-songwriter Waa Wei is a woman of many talents. She recently posted a short story on her Facebook page, and it was so interesting that I felt I should share it with you guys! Artists such as Waa show us that Artists are not just objects, but truly Artists in the true sense of meaning. They are not entertainment figures for us to mock by following their exploits as published by the latest Gossip magazines or newspapers, but are people who make meaning from all types of media; be it music, text or visual. But I digress. Hope you guys enjoy reading Waa's story too, and hopefully we can see more storytimes coming up in the future too!
In that moment, she opened her eyes. The corners of them were not filled with tears, but hinted at a desire to wipe away the tears streaming down her face in the dream. It could be because their separation was premature; the shock of realisation could only be expressed and comforted in the work of dreams. Everything requires you to find the answer, actually whatever the answer may be, after revealing the truth it all just turns out to be a facade that you've tricked yourself into believing.
The apartment you live in suddenly has another room, another big balcony and also another girl. I walk into the toilet with a sense of familiarity, wanting to examine whether my teeth are still there; the scent of her shampoo assaisl my nostrils and evidences her place here. Head drooped, I pretended nothing had happened and made to leave, but why did she smile at me curiously while staring at me? Your back to me; before I left I still turned back to hug you, and even kissed your arms.
I hope to never dream of you again, when I wake all I'm left with is regret I can't bear.
I hope to still be able to dream of you, fervently wishing we are still well in our embrace.
"Don't say, Don't Say, Don't Say, As long as you're holding me, holding me, holding me..."
Unsure as to whether you are also thinking of me when I'm thinking of you,
But what is for certain is that with someone by your side accompanying you, you won't be afraid of loneliness anymore.
So many singers that i love are releasing their new albums soon! Sorry if I've repeated some of these updates before - I just want to make sure I've got them up here:)
-more new info on S.H.E's new album! The three sisters will be releasing their first album together in three years on the 16th of November this year. The album is called (花又开好了)(the flowers are open again) I'm really excited to see them together again , and I'm sure so are all you S.H.E fans out there!
-Angela Chang will be releasing her new album on the 21st of October and it is called （有隐的翅膀)（wings that have a shadow) . I'm guessing it may be something to do with her 2006 hit song , <Invisible Wings>.
-Lots of singers are actually planning on releasing greatest hits albums this year , show luo will be releasing his in November this year while elva will be releasing hers in December! I'm not as excited because they're just greatest hits album , but a tip for fans who are still catching up with artists' earlier works- greatest hits albums are a really good way to familiarize yourself with their older works all in one compact cd! Plus they usually record one or two singles to go with it:)
-Waa Wei will be releasing her new EP on the 10/10 this October called ＜没有星期五的无人岛＞（the empty island without Fridays).
-黄雅莉(Huang ya li)will be releasing her new album on the 18th of October called <年轮＞!
-jam hsiao will be releasing his new album in November this year. After being nominated for best make singer at the golden melody awards last year , im so excited to hear some if his new works!
-Amei will also be releasing her new album sometime early next year!
-awesome aboriginal rock band Matzka will be releasing their new album at the end of the year!
-Karen mok will also be releasing her new album at the end of the year :)
